JOE MARTA MUSICIAN, COMPOSER, & ARRANGER
Theme and Variations for Cornet
A Note from the Composer:
My sophomore year of college the trumpet professor announced we were going to have a studio recital, and we were allowed to choose the rep we wanted to play. At this point in my playing, I wasn't familiar with too much rep, but I knew I wanted to play a piece specifically written for cornet. Earlier that semester I was fortunate enough to receive a beautiful 1960's era Bach Stradivarius cornet, and the only 'payment' I had to give was to make sure this instrument was cared for and played. My lesson teacher, Mark Hughes, was trying to help me find a cornet solo, and we probably got through about six or seven. I wanted to make sure I could find a piece that pushed my abilities, while also sounding really good (especially because the generous donor was coming to see the concert!!). At one of our lessons, Mark cracked a joke about me writing my own piece for the recital. And then we both had the realization; just write my own piece! The next week I brought a rough draft, and the week after that I had a completed piece. A small side note, this cornet has most notably been played on with the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra, Rutgers Wind Ensemble, Princeton Brass Band, as well as other endeavors. |
